What do you think about Electronic Logs?
The FMSCA proposed a rule that all drivers will need to use Electronic Logging Devices. After the final rule all interstate carriers/drivers will have to make the switch to ELD’s. They will have specific rules on which ELD’s you can use and it will have to be registered with FMSCA. Right now the FMSCA is accepting comments and ideas about this proposed rule until May 27, 2014.
There will be many adjustments for drivers, not familiar with ELD’s. They do not round to the nearest 15 minutes like paper logs. You should not log into your device 1 minute before your breaks are over, but by doing this you can gain more time throughout the day. Some drivers have reported a 45 minute gain.
Even with these new adjustments there are many advantages to using the ELD’s. The biggest one is the amount of time a driver spends on paper work; this will be cut down drastically. It gives drivers more time to rest and relax, and they tend to not get pushed as hard. The new mandate also has a button on the ELD to use in the sleeper, so a driver can get his required rest.
